Travel Day: White Castle Burgers, Ohio, and Lake Erie

Today was a travel day. We left Michigan, travelled through Ohio and ended our day at Erie KOA in Pennsylvania. Ariel and Wyatt had a full day of school in the truck. We had a few challenges with overlapping class Zoom calls, but once we got Ariel’s headphones plugged in, things went much better. She worked hard and finished her assignments. I am so thankful for cell service today. Being able to hotspot off my phone was a lifesaver.

Just outside Detroit, we stopped so that Ron could introduce the kids to freshly made White Castle burgers. He was in heaven with his little sliders and the kids loved it too.  Wyatt must be growing because he gobbled down 4 sliders and would have kept eating if only we’d ordered more with cheese.

Ron and I really loved Michigan, but we’ve been surprised by how pretty the woods in Ohio are too. I didn’t expect such thick lush forests. The leaves haven’t started to change colour like the trees in Michigan, but today is only just the first day of fall so they have time.

We drove around the outskirts of Cleveland and Ron did a great job of finding me water access to Lake Erie so that I could dip my toes. Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes—so shallow it’s conditions can rapidly change from calm to stormy quite rapidly. The waves might change from small rollers to 10-foot breakers in a matter of minutes. With over 100 different species of fish, it also is the largest producer of fish of all the Great Lakes.  More fish are caught in Lake Erie for human consumption than all the other 4 Great Lakes combined.

The park we stopped at was lovely with all its bridges and a view of downtown Cleveland from the shore. Ariel enjoyed posing for a picture at the Cleveland sign. She is becoming more animated in her poses as the trip goes on, and her little brother is picking up on this and striking some good poses too.

Hello from Cleveland!

After I got my picture at Lake Erie we were back on the road for the last push to our campsite.  We arrived just as the sun was setting. Thankfully we have some shorter days ahead and a two day stay tomorrow at our next stop. Tonight’s campsite had a nice paved patio with a table and chairs and a BBQ.  We barbecued and ate a cozy late dinner. The campground was so quiet that we wondered if everyone had tucked in early, but then we caught a glimpse of fireworks going off in the town of Erie. Perhaps many of the campers were out for the fireworks show.  Whatever the case it wasn’t long before we were all tucked in too.  It’s an early start tomorrow for our shorter journey to our campsite in NY state.

Goodnight from Pennsylvania!
