Travel Day: Cozy & Colourful New England

What a beautiful drive we had today. We drove through upstate New York, into Vermont, and ended in New Hampshire. The fall colours were gorgeous and we fell in love with all the small towns and villages along our route. The fall foliage and the quaint towns decorated for autumn and Halloween made us feel very cozy. Yummy pumpkin flavoured coffee would be perfect on a day like today! We know the winters can feel long here, but Ron and I agree that we would love to live somewhere we could experience four distinct seasons. We are falling in love with this part of the US.

Ron has been playing 50’s music along this trip. It’s been fun and reminded me of my childhood. I can still hear my dad singing along to all these tunes during our family road trips. Growing up, we always had music playing—the oldies were always big favorites—and now we’re doing the same with our kids. I’ve even got Ron to start singing along at times. The kids have enjoyed their dad’s singing, whether he nails the lyrics and tunes, or not.  But hey, vehicle acoustics are like shower acoustics. There are just some places that make everyone sound pitch perfect.

On our drive today I swear we caught a glimpse of the St. Lawrence River in Canada.  We were so incredibly close to the border and when we looked toward the northern horizon I think we saw the St. Lawrence. Even if we didn’t, I like to believe we did. When the borders open up again Ron and I want to come back this way and do a trip through the Northeastern US and Eastern Canada.  Eastern Canada has been on my list of regions I really want to explore, and another family camping road trip would be the perfect way to do it.

We stopped in a small town in Vermont to pick up some cheese for our meat and cheese platters, take the dogs for a walk, and stretch. The dogs are a bit of a gong show on walks since Remi always wants to be the leader or jump on Maggie and she’s always rigid with intensity, looking for rabbits and squirrels. I wonder if Ron is now regretting getting me another puppy?  Haha  I don’t know how many grumbles under his breath I have heard directed at our sweet but crazy pups. I can’t wait for Remi to start his training with Mike!

After our brief stop we were back on the road and pulled into Twin Mountains KOA in NH at 5:30 pm. What a beautiful campground. One campsite was even decorated for Halloween with lights and skeletons, and that made Ron happy. He absolutely loves Halloween, especially mixed with the fall colours. This KOA ranks as one of our favourites so far.  The campsites were so nice and the playground was spot on for the kids.  After setting up we took the pups to the dog park, which was right beside the big playground. We loved hearing all the giggles coming from the play structures as they ran around and made friends. Maggie and Remi made friends in the dog park too and got some good playtime in.

Ron and I relaxed with a glass of wine as we supervised all 4 of our children (including our fur kids) and talked about how amazing this day had been.  The owners of this KOA had a socially distanced s’mores roast for the campers and we chatted with some of the other families camping there. I think we have finally figured out our printer and network problem.  After chatting with our camping neighbours I now have a new game plan.  They experienced the same issue and so we will try their hotspot networking plan next.  Fingers crossed it works.  The s’mores and play time wore out the kids and pups. After we got them all settled, Ron and I made a late dinner, sat by the fire and then called it a night.

S’mores and the dog park for a relaxing end to our day

This part of the US has impressed us and we already can’t wait to be back. We are excited to see Maine tomorrow.

Goodnight from New Hampshire!
