A Windy Travel Day, Route 66, More Dog Mischief, and Date Night

Remi was at it again with Ron today. We are used to getting up a few times in the night to let Remi outside for a pee break. Now, Ron jumps up at the slightest bark just like I used to do when the kids cried at night as babies. After a long night, Remi was into all kinds of mischief this morning.  Ron put the pups outside and every 30 minutes we heard strange chewing noises. Each time, Remi had somehow managed to find something new to chew and try to destroy. Whether it was chewing on the kids special water bottles, their swimsuits, or Ron’s bug salt gun he found a way to get Ron’s attention. Remi is now like that neighborhood child whose name everyone knows because they are always in trouble. Everyone knows the name of our pup. Remi is Ron’s Dennis the Menace.

Today, the truck got an oil change for the second time on this trip. It was so convenient this time because a GMC dealership was within walking distance from our campsite. It meant a slightly later start than we like but it was worth it for an easy oil change. This should be the last one we need before we reach home. After we hitched up the RV, we made a necessary stop at Walmart for some special Halloween cereal for the kids. We are now stocked with enough Boo Berry and Frankenberry to get us through to Halloween. Breakfast tomorrow morning will be very exciting for the kids and they are already talking about it.

We drove across Oklahoma along old Route 66. At some points we were on it and then other times we just drove alongside it. I-40 has become one of the new east to west highways since it is a lot faster and does not weave through towns and cities. Ron noticed right away the strong winds as we traveled through the prairies of Oklahoma. It definitely made our RV sway more than once and made us all nervous.

At one point we had that stereotypical moment when a tumbleweed blew across the highway in front of us. I could see Ron shudder. Seeing how fast it was moving, he knew that wind was going to push at the RV again. Needless to say we were very happy to get to our campsite just outside Elk City.  It is too windy to put out the awning on our RV and I believe the reason why there are no fire pits here is because it is so windy. Sparks would fly and start so many wildfires.

Apparently, this is the only KOA that has a little bar and restaurant set up at their main office. Ron and I took advantage of that to relax for a moment with a cold beer while the kids finished up their school work. We were able to sit on their outside patio which was right across from our campsite. Kids and pups were in clear sight which put me at ease. We almost felt like we were on a date, and it’s been a long time since we have had a date night so this was fun.

Our routine now seems to be finishing our evenings at the dog park and playground and tonight was no exception. Maggie and Remi tried to make friends with two little chihuahuas but they wouldn’t have it. So it was a shorter time at the park for them. After fighting bedtime for 30 minutes, the kids finally went to sleep. Ron and I relaxed outside in the warm breeze. I’m thankful for the wind because it keeps the bugs away. A few nights on this trip the bugs have been so bad they’ve driven us inside. The pups were happy to have us outside where they could hang out with us. Whenever I looked over at Remi I saw him gazing lovingly at Ron.

Let’s hope he gives Ron some peace tonight (though I highly doubt he will).  No wonder Ron is so sleepy each night. He’s an exhausted new parent. Again I am trying not to laugh.

Goodnight from Oklahoma!
