Exploring Acadia NP and Delightful Maine

Today started with pancakes! That and Ron’s breakfast burritos are a favourite at camp. He cooked them outside on the grill and the kids played along the shore. We enjoyed a relaxing morning in the fog and mist before loading the truck for Acadia National Park.

After stopping for our picture at the National Park sign, we visited the park store. The line to get in was long since Covid restricted the number of people allowed in the store at once. My crew got restless, and I felt like a mama duck trying to gather up all her ducklings. I found my NP magnet for our stove in the camper (our fridge isn’t magnetic so the stove gets to look pretty). The kids were excited to pick out what they wanted with money from their grandparents.  Wyatt homed in on the candy selections and Ariel chose a bracelet.

Acadia NP was beautiful.  We did a beautiful drive up to Cadillac Mountain. It’s the highest point (1530 ft) along the North Atlantic and the first place to see the sunrise in the United States from October 7 through March 6. Tectonic forces pushed this mountain up millions of years ago. Then, glaciation sheared off it’s top and exposed the beautiful granite rock.

The low lying clouds obstructed our view, but we enjoyed hiking on the top. My fear of heights kicked into high gear. It was hard for me to even get remotely close the edge. Ron, on the other hand, loved the view at the edge and  joked that all the rocky shelves would break his fall on the way down. Not funny! The leaves in Acadia NP haven’t turned like the leaves in New Hampshire but I know it won’t be long. I wish we had another week here to see all the trees in fall colours.

After exploring the park, we went to Parson’s in Bar Harbor to pick up fresh lobster to bbq for a late lunch. They were so friendly and helpful, even taking the time to walk us through some grilling how tos. Ron has always wanted to recreate the bbq lobster scene from the movie “The Great Outdoors”. He was hopeful today might be the day. Ariel and Wyatt loved to look at all the lobsters in the tank. I found it hard, knowing that two would soon become our lunch.  On our way back to camp, we stopped at Bar Harbor Cellars for some wine tasting and bought our favourites to enjoy along our trip.

Ron followed all the tips from Parson’s to prepare and bbq the lobster and he and the kids gobbled it up. It wasn’t quite the same as the Great Outdoors, but they loved it. I even tried a piece—I had to! I’m in Maine after all. I’ll admit my sample was pretty good and I’m not known to be a huge fan of seafood.

After lunch I did laundry (I wish I had a laundry fairy to do it for me) while Ron hooked up the cable in the RV so that we could try to watch the Seahawks game. Sadly we weren’t able to get the Seahawks game, but we did see a Seahawks flag flying up high on another RV’s flagpole. How fun it was to see that! My fantasy football team missed the memo that they were supposed to play today, so Ron is beating me right now.

A highlight of the evening was enjoying free hotdogs and chili. If you stay at KOA’s I recommend installing the KOA app. It alerted us that our campground was serving free food and offering a cider and seltzer tasting.  This was a relaxing way to end our stay here. The kids ate their hotdogs and played on the playground beside us while Bob served up the tastings.  What a super friendly campground this was. Tomorrow is a long travel day so we called it an early night.

Good night from Maine!
