Island Life and Toe-dipping Mission Accomplished

With another short drive today, Ron wanted to get to our next campsite with lots of time to relax this afternoon. Well, we did it! We were up and out of camp by 6:15 am. About 30 minutes into our trip the kids and I fell back asleep, but Ron got to see the sunrise as we drove through the rest of Pennsylvania. By the time the kids and I truly woke up, the sun was above the horizon and we were about to enter the state of New York.

Ron and I spent our 5th Wedding Anniversary in New York and so I have such fond memories of our time here.  We won’t be headed into the city (who would be that crazy with an RV?), but we were still excited to enter the state today. I am so thankful our family had the opportunity to take this road trip. We’ve loved the amazing scenery changes and the rewarding family time. You definitely bond after spending hours and hours together in a truck.

I also love how the kids have moved away from needing iPads to entertain them and are now using their imaginations and playing with each other (it helps that we packed their iPads away). It reminds me of the road trips my family and I took when I was growing up and my sister and I would play with our Barbies in the back seat.  Yes there is fighting and backseat line-drawing to set boundaries, but it’s how family road trips work.

Ron researched a great KOA campsite that is on a small island on Lake Ontario. We are excited to have 2 nights to enjoy our island getaway. Along the way, we stopped at Walmart to look for a router and a hotspot booster. I bought a printer for this trip and without a good network for it to run off of it just doesn’t work. We’ve tried almost everything to get this ridiculous printer to connect to our laptops, but it just doesn’t work. This is when I wish I was more tech savvy for sure! We were able to find a router, but we are still out of luck for a hotspot booster.  Let’s hope we can figure this out before the end of our trip.

The kids started their school activities on the road and finished as we set up camp. Both kids had a great day at school, and Ariel and I have found some great books that she loves to read. School finished up and we walked down to water behind our campsite.  What an amazing campsite it is too—right on the shore of Lake Ontario. The rocky shores made for an interesting dip of the toes in the water, but now my quest is complete.

I have officially stepped into every Great Lake!!

With Covid, things are pretty buttoned up here, but we can still order what we need from the camp store. Tonight, we needed a longer electrical cord and firewood. Within 30 minutes of ordering, the golf cart arrived with our delivery.  Then, thanks to our early arrival, Ron and I finally got a chance to play ladder ball. After carrying it with us so far, Ron really wanted a chance to play. This game has become a favourite of ours, especially when we camp with my mom and dad. To say that we are a little competitive with each other is an understatement. I wish I could say I won but I didn’t. Next time!  It will be wonderful to have another full day here to relax, participate in school for the kids, and play on the beach.

Our campsite faces west, so we watched a beautiful sunset as we made dinner. Our friends Mike and Melayne (Mike is also the trainer of our GSP and he’s amazing) gave us some halibut fillets that Mike caught in Alaska earlier this year. When I loaded up our RV for this trip they went right into our freezer. I knew it would make a delicious dinner and I was right. We ate the BEST meal tonight. I still have one fillet left, and I may just save it for Canadian Thanksgiving next month.  That’s how great it was!  To top off our evening Mike called to say hi to us and it was great to catch up.

Goodnight from this lovely campsite in New York. The waves are crashing and I am in heaven.
